The U.S. Census Bureau has published preliminary data from the 2024 Annual Survey of School System Finances, offering an early look at public school spending per pupil and state-level summary statistics on revenues and expenditures for the 2024 fiscal year.

The data covers pre-kindergarten through 12th grade and provides information about how much public schools are spending per student across different states. The survey also summarizes how much money school systems are receiving and spending at the state level.

It is important to note that the fiscal year referenced in the survey is not consistent for all school systems, as it may vary by district. The Census Bureau does not adjust the data to standardize fiscal years among different school systems.

According to the Census Bureau, these figures are preliminary and may be revised before final publication. The agency plans to release the complete FY 2024 Annual Survey of School System Finances for all 50 states and the District of Columbia in 2026.

There was no accompanying news release with this data; only a tip sheet was provided.
