Florida’s public universities have achieved significant recognition in the 2026 Best Colleges rankings by U.S. News & World Report, with a record seven institutions now listed among the top 100 public national universities. The state remains among the top three nationwide for the number of its public universities in this category. Florida Atlantic University appears in the top 100 for the first time.

According to U.S. News & World Report’s latest list:
– University of Florida is ranked #7
– Florida State University is #21 (up two spots)
– University of South Florida is #43 (up two spots)
– Florida International University is #46
– University of Central Florida is #61
– Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University is #92
– Florida Atlantic University enters at #100 (up three spots)
In regional rankings for Southern colleges:
– Florida Polytechnic University holds #1 among regional public colleges for five consecutive years.
– The University of West Florida moved up four places to reach #6 among regional public universities.
– New College of Florida is ranked as the tenth-best public liberal arts college.
Additional distinctions were highlighted:
Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University remains ranked as the top Public HBCU for seven straight years.
Florida Polytechnic University also ranks second among all regional colleges (public and private), third best value among southern public schools, and has a top 30 undergraduate engineering program nationally among schools without a PhD program.
Florida State University stands twelfth nationally for first-year experiences at public universities.
The University of Florida has stayed within America’s top ten public universities for eight years running.
The University of South Florida has been in the national top fifty for five consecutive years; it also ranks twelfth best value among publics and nineteenth most innovative school overall.
The University of West Florida continues as a leading choice for veterans in its region.

U.S. News & World Report determines these rankings using metrics such as graduation rates, social mobility indicators like student debt levels or retention rates after freshman year as well as academic reputation.
