The IAM Union Local 2198 Young Workers Committee in Houston recently joined forces with the Community Service Committee to organize a winter blanket drive aimed at supporting individuals experiencing homelessness. The initiative resulted in the collection of 30 bags containing blankets, beanies, gloves, and emergency blankets for distribution ahead of the winter season. All donations were provided by members of IAM Local 2198.
Participants from the Young Workers Committee included Chairperson Quintarius Oliver, along with Cora Walker and Eva Brooks. The Community Service Committee was represented by Chairperson Albert Harmason and members Maria Caban and Tamisha Hodges.
The committee has engaged in several community service activities across Houston. Recently, it hosted its first Dora Cervantes Bowling Fundraiser, which brought together union members, families, and supporters. Proceeds from this event supported Guide Dogs of America | Tender Loving Canines to help provide services free of charge to recipients.
Additionally, the committee collaborated with Communities in Schools at Elsik High School by donating over 50 fully stocked backpacks to students before the start of the school year.
“This is a powerful example of union values in action,” said IAM Union Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen. “Local 2198’s Young Workers are stepping up to lead with compassion, proving that our union’s commitment to service extends well beyond the job.”
IAM Union Local 2198 President Enrique Bojórquez highlighted the contributions of younger members: “Our Young Workers are setting the standard for what it means to be engaged, active union members,” Bojórquez said. “From fundraising to hands-on service, they continue to show up for both our community and our union.”
IAM Women’s and Young Workers Director Dee Colbert commented on the broader impact: “IAM Young Workers are committed to service, leadership and building stronger communities,” Colbert said. “The work being done by Local 2198’s Young Workers Committee in Houston reflects the future of our union. IAM Young Workers are driven, compassionate and community-focused.”
Through these efforts, IAM Local 2198’s young members continue their outreach while emphasizing core union values.
