IAM District 776 has dedicated its union hall atrium to honor Robert Martinez Jr., a Fort Worth native and retired International President of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM). The tribute recognizes Martinez’s 43 years of service to the IAM, including eight years as International President and two decades on the Executive Council.

Martinez began his career in 1980 as an aircraft assembler and member of Local 776A. He is noted for being the first Latino to join the IAM Executive Council. The newly unveiled gallery features photographs, mementos, and awards highlighting his achievements.

“This hall, this district, and this union has meant the world to me and my family,” said Martinez. “This union gave me a purpose when I was 20 years old. It gave me a shot at the American dream, to make a living and support my family. Together, we have improved the lives of countless IAM members.”

During his leadership, Martinez guided the IAM through challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic by supporting relief efforts for airline and aerospace workers that preserved many jobs. He also led efforts to expand IAM membership into new sectors like healthcare and contributed to making IAM a leading affiliate in National Labor Relations Board union election victories from 2018 through 2022.

Martinez established programs designed to assist members and their families, with initiatives focused on veterans’ assistance, addiction services, and advancing women’s leadership within the organization through programs such as IAM LEADS.

The dedication ceremony also recognized Paul Black, District 776 President Directing Business Representative, and Earnest Boone, Business Representative—both retiring after 45 years with IAM.

Martinez expressed appreciation for Joe Alviar, an IAM Business Representative, and his wife Linda for their work in designing the atrium displays.

“Again I say thank you. It’s been a great honor,” said Martinez. “Our leadership, headed by our great International President Brian Bryant, has the IAM going in the right direction. I can’t wait to see where we’re going next, and I’m cheering all of you and our union on from retirement.”
