Local entrepreneurs Brian and Elizabeth McCadie have launched Transparensea, a glass bottom boat service in Islamorada, Florida Keys. The new venture operates out of Robbie’s Marina and offers both day and night trips for visitors.
Brian McCadie, who has experience as a U.S. Coast Guard fishing charter captain, developed the idea to provide a unique way for guests to observe marine life in an area that he considered underexplored. His wife Elizabeth, who has been involved in various business activities at Robbie’s Marina, supported the project from its early stages.
The Transparensea vessel is 46 feet long and features 16 window wells for underwater viewing. It can accommodate up to 30 passengers and includes amenities such as comfortable seating, a restroom, and Seakeeper technology designed to reduce seasickness. One notable aspect of the boat is its underwater lighting system, which enables night tours—a first among glass bottom boats operating in the United States.
“Our goal was to create something families could enjoy after dark,” said Brian McCadie. “The lights make such a difference, and the sea life is more active at night—this is truly a one-of-a-kind experience in The Keys.”
Tours include narrated trips highlighting coral formations at sites like Cheeca Rocks, Caloosa Rocks, and Alligator Reef. The routes are planned to give participants an opportunity to see local marine species while avoiding congested boating areas.
Transparensea runs daily except on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Two-hour tours depart at noon and 3 p.m., with evening departures scheduled about 20 minutes after sunset. Additional information or reservations can be made through their website www.glassbottomtour.com or by calling 305-21-GLASS.
