The City of Fort Myers, in collaboration with Lee County Solid Waste, will hold a Household Chemical Waste Collection event on Wednesday, December 17. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Alliance for the Arts, located at 10091 McGregor Blvd.

Residents can use this drive-through service to dispose of household chemicals such as leftover paints, cleaners, herbicides, pesticides, automotive fluids, and pool chemicals. There is no charge for participating in the collection. According to organizers, “Lee County Solid Waste hosts the event in partnership with the City of Fort Myers to provide residents a convenient and responsible way to dispose of chemicals that might otherwise be harmful to people or the environment.”

In addition to chemical waste collection, the City of Fort Myers Solid Waste Department will offer bulk item collection at the same location. Items accepted include furniture, appliances, and tires. A representative from Solid Waste will be present to assist with bulk item drop-off during the event.

Officials also urge residents to handle battery disposal properly. All rechargeable or lithium-ion batteries should be brought either to this collection event or to the Lee County Topaz Court facility rather than being placed in regular garbage service. Improper disposal of these batteries can pose hazards due to their presence in many everyday products such as electronic devices (mobile phones, laptops), power tools, game controllers, digital cameras, portable power packs, greeting cards, electric toothbrushes, toys, e-bikes, e-scooters, and hover boards.

“Please bring all rechargeable or lithium-ion batteries to the collection event or to the Lee County Topaz Court facility. Do not throw rechargeable batteries in with your regular garbage service,” city officials stated.
