The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) is marking National Safe Digging Day on August 11 by reminding residents about the importance of safe digging. As people prepare for home projects, PSC Chairman Mike La Rosa emphasized the risks involved with striking underground utility lines.
“Striking underground utility lines can lead to costly fines, serious injuries, unplanned expenses, and significant delays,” said PSC Chairman Mike La Rosa. “To avoid these risks, we strongly encourage all Floridians to call 8-1-1 at least two business days before starting any digging project.”
In Florida, calling 811 connects residents to Sunshine 811. This organization notifies local utility companies so they can send professionals to mark the location of underground lines with flags or paint. This process aims to prevent accidents and reduce damage related to excavation work.
National Safe Digging Day is a campaign led by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA). The initiative seeks to raise awareness about the need for safe digging practices by encouraging individuals to contact 8-1-1 before starting any type of excavation.
