The Florida Public Service Commission (FPSC) is urging residents to focus on efficient energy use during National Energy Awareness Month this October. The agency points out that being careful with energy not only reduces environmental impact but also helps lower utility bills.
“Energy Awareness Month highlights the power of making smart energy choices,” said FPSC Chairman Mike La Rosa. “When consumers take simple steps to conserve energy, they not only lower their monthly utility bills but also gain more control over their household costs.”
Florida ranks as the second-largest electricity producer in the United States, just after Texas, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The state’s households consume a significant portion of this electricity—accounting for 54% of total usage in 2023, which is the highest residential share among all states. Much of this demand comes from air conditioning and electric heating.
The FPSC recommends that Floridians consider Energy Awareness Month as an opportunity to commit to smarter energy habits throughout the year. By making thoughtful choices now, residents can help ensure a more affordable and reliable energy future.
