Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) is the only institution in Florida, and one of just 16 in the United States, to offer a PGA-accredited golf management program. The bachelor’s degree is designed to prepare students for a range of roles in the golf industry.

Classes for the program are held in Sugden Hall, where students access advanced technology to develop their skills. The facility includes the Swing Performance Lab and Golf Club Fitting Lab. The Swing Performance Lab features two hitting bays equipped with Trackman launch monitors, which use radar, infrared, and high-speed imaging to collect data on ball and club performance.

Leonie Wulfers, a junior on FGCU’s women’s golf team, said: “The swing lab has been a game changer for me. You have the best practice tools right here next to your classroom — this is very special.”

Program director Tara McKenna highlighted the importance of these tools for students’ career readiness: “What this room allows us to do is gain the knowledge necessary in the latest technology in the instructional and game space to be prepared to deliver high‑level and high-quality instruction and analysis.”

The curriculum also covers club fitting, repair, and merchandising. Students admitted to this specialized program spend four to four-and-a-half years completing their degree, including 16 months of paid internships at golf facilities across the country. Graduates are eligible for PGA Class A membership.

FGCU’s location gives students access to more than 140 golf courses within an hour’s drive, offering opportunities for internships, part-time work, and networking with over 550 local PGA professionals. McKenna noted: “The teaching and coaching space can be very competitive, so the more knowledge you can bring to that space, the more you can separate yourself from other coworkers.”

The program also uses Wellputt putting platforms with SAM PuttLab and Blast Motion technologies for putting analysis. The Golf Club Fitting Lab includes equipment such as lie/loft machines and swing-weight tools. McKenna said: “So for our students to have a fully appointed fitting cart with all the pieces, they now know how to club fit with different components, allowing them to interchange shafts and heads. So this can be a full-circle moment for students.”

Club vendors and sales representatives regularly visit to demonstrate new products and engage with students. This exposure helps prepare students for specialized careers such as club fitting.

Christian Oster, a recent graduate, described his experience: “One of the most impactful lessons I learned was how much equipment truly matters to a golfer’s performance. That inspired me to start a business that not only helps players play better but get the proper equipment.” Oster interned at The Vineyards Country Club in Naples before founding Oster Golf Co., which offers regripping and club building services. He added: “Overall, FGCU and the PGM program not only taught me the technical skills to succeed in golf management but also provided the spark, the vision and the connections to turn my passion into a thriving business.”

Students from FGCU’s program continue to build on their education as they pursue various careers within the golf industry.
