Duke Energy thanks Carolinas customers for conserving power during extreme cold

Duke Energy has expressed appreciation to its customers in the Carolinas for reducing electricity usage during a period of extreme cold on Monday morning. The company reported that these conservation efforts helped reduce stress on the electric grid and supported reliable service during one of the season’s coldest mornings.

“Customer conservation made a meaningful difference today,” said Gerald Wilson, Duke Energy vice president of grid operations. “We appreciate every household and business that adjusted their routines to help manage energy demand on the grid through this period of unusual cold, and we’re grateful for the support from local, state and federal officials who helped encourage conservation. Our teams continue to work around the clock to ensure that our power plants and grid remain ready to meet our customers’ energy needs.”

Duke Energy stated it is prepared to reliably meet customer demand for the remainder of the week. The company continues efforts to diversify its energy sources in order to support economic growth and increased energy needs in North Carolina and South Carolina.

The utility encourages customers to maintain energy-saving habits as cold weather persists. Duke Energy provides several low- or no-cost tips for saving energy at duke-energy.com/SeasonalSavings. Customers can also access flexible payment options such as installment plans, choosing their due date, or requesting an extension. Additional assistance programs include Share the Light Fund, Payment Assistance Finder, and community resources available through 211.org.

Other tools offered by Duke Energy include exploring alternative rate options, enrolling qualifying smart thermostats for bill credits, and tracking energy use via its website or mobile app.

Duke Energy serves about 4.7 million electric customers in North Carolina and South Carolina combined. The company operates across six states with 8.6 million electric customers nationwide and owns over 55,000 megawatts of energy capacity. Its natural gas utilities serve 1.7 million customers across five states.

The company is investing in major upgrades to its electric grid and expanding cleaner generation sources such as natural gas, nuclear power, renewables, and energy storage.
