As colder temperatures are expected to arrive in the Carolinas next week, Duke Energy is encouraging customers to take steps to manage their energy use and control costs. The company notes that heating systems will be working harder as temperatures drop below average for November.

According to Duke Energy, customers who have participated in its energy efficiency programs have collectively saved more than $1 billion on their bills since 2019. The company says this demonstrates the significant impact of adopting energy-saving measures during colder months.

Duke Energy recommends several ways for customers to monitor and reduce their energy consumption. Customers can receive personalized usage alerts when their energy use increases, allowing them to make adjustments before higher costs accrue. Usage dashboards are also available, breaking down consumption by day, week, or billing cycle so customers can identify opportunities for savings.

Simple actions suggested by Duke Energy include setting thermostats to the lowest comfortable setting, sealing leaks and insulating homes to prevent drafts, having heating systems professionally maintained, changing air filters regularly, using sunlight to naturally warm spaces during the day, and operating ceiling fans clockwise in winter.

The company offers several programs aimed at helping customers save money. These include free home energy assessments with complimentary efficiency kits and expert recommendations; rebates through the Smart $aver program for upgrades such as insulation and efficient equipment; bill credits for enrolling smart thermostats and water heaters in Power Manager/EnergyWise Home programs; and weatherization assistance for income-qualified customers.

Duke Energy serves electric utility customers across six states and natural gas utility customers in five states. The company is investing in grid upgrades and cleaner generation sources as part of an ongoing transition toward a smarter energy future.
