Prolonged cold weather in the Carolinas has led to increased energy use and higher bills for many residents, according to Duke Energy. The region is currently experiencing several days of temperatures at or below freezing, which is 10 to 20 degrees lower than average for this time of year. This could be the longest stretch of cold since January 2018, with possible snow accumulation expected on Saturday.
Duke Energy states that extended low temperatures cause heating systems to run longer, resulting in higher home energy consumption. To help customers manage their bills during this period, the company is offering practical tips and flexible payment options.
The company recommends setting thermostats to the lowest comfortable setting, sealing leaks and adding insulation, using sunlight by opening blinds during the day and closing them at night, and operating ceiling fans clockwise to circulate warm air.
Duke Energy also offers programs such as smart thermostat rewards, where customers can receive a $150 initial bill credit and $50 annually after enrolling a qualifying smart thermostat in Power Manager/EnergyWise Home. Participants allow brief adjustments of up to four degrees during peak demand periods. Additionally, the Flex Savings Option encourages shifting energy use to off-peak times for potential savings.
For those needing more flexibility with payments, options include choosing a due date that aligns with payday through Pick Your Due Date, requesting short extensions if unable to pay on time, or breaking down past-due balances into installment plans.
Customers seeking further assistance can use the Payment Assistance Finder tool to locate local organizations that offer utility bill support or apply for help from the Share the Light Fund. Dialing 211 connects customers with additional community resources.
Duke Energy serves electric customers across six states and natural gas customers in five states. The company continues investing in grid upgrades and cleaner generation sources as part of its broader transition strategy.
