Over 5,600 scam reports have been recorded in 2025 across Duke Energy’s service areas, according to company data. As part of ongoing efforts to protect customers, Duke Energy, Piedmont Natural Gas, and the Better Business Bureau are joining Utilities United Against Scams (UUAS) for the 10th annual Utility Scam Awareness Day on November 19.

Utility Scam Awareness Day has been observed for a decade with the goal of helping customers recognize and avoid scams related to utility services. Nearly 3,000 scam reports were received by Duke Energy in the Carolinas alone through October this year.

The campaign urges customers to slow down when faced with suspicious payment requests, verify information using official channels such as phone numbers or websites listed on their bills, and report any suspected scams to their utility provider or law enforcement. Customers can use tools like Duke Energy’s Scam Reporting Tool, Piedmont Natural Gas’ Scams & Fraud resource, or the Better Business Bureau’s Scam Tracker for reporting and advice.

Scammers often demand immediate payment or threaten service disconnection—tactics that legitimate utilities say they never use. Requests for payment via prepaid cards or cryptocurrency are also cited as warning signs.

Jessica Bishop, senior vice president of Customer Services Operations at Duke Energy, stated: “Scammers change scripts; our guidance doesn’t: We don’t threaten instant shutoff, and we don’t dictate how you pay. If you hear either, stop and verify with us directly.”

Brian Weisker, senior vice president and president of Piedmont Natural Gas at Duke Energy added: “Our promise is simple: clear natural gas bills, secure payment channels, and support when something feels off. We urge everyone to stay vigilant, verify before you pay, and contact us right away whenever concerns arise.”

Juliana O’Rork of the Better Business Bureau said: “Scammers are willing to try anything to steal your money and/or your identity. Pressure, secrecy and odd payment methods are the tells. At BBB, we strive to provide consumers and businesses with as much information as possible about scams that have been reported to us via BBB Scam Tracker.”

Duke Energy serves electric customers in six states including North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. Its natural gas utilities serve parts of North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Ohio and Kentucky. The company continues investments in grid upgrades and cleaner energy sources.

Piedmont Natural Gas is a subsidiary of Duke Energy serving over 1.2 million customers in three states.

The Better Business Bureau provides resources for consumers seeking trustworthy businesses and charities across North America.
