Approximately 56 employees at Discovery World, a science museum in Milwaukee, have voted to join the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM Union). The decision comes after a campaign focused on fair pay, career advancement opportunities, and having a greater say in workplace matters.
IAM Midwest Territory Special Representative Adante Balke commented on the outcome: “Congratulations to the Discovery World workers on making their voices heard and officially winning their union election. These dedicated employees are coming together to demand respect, fair wages, better benefits, and greater transparency in promotions and hiring. By standing united, they are now preparing to bargain collectively for a stronger future.”
The newly unionized group plans to begin negotiations for their first contract. Their goals include improving wages and benefits, expanding career development options, and ensuring that workplace concerns can be raised without fear of retaliation. Collective bargaining is expected to provide them with a formal process for addressing issues related to their jobs.
During the organizing effort, some workers expressed concerns about management’s actions. They cited what they described as anti-union tactics intended to discourage unionization efforts and noted the dismissal of an employee who was openly supportive of forming a union.
Discovery World staff play an important role in running interactive exhibits, events, and educational programs at the museum. Their work supports families, students, and visitors who come to the facility.
IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli acknowledged local government officials who supported the workers’ right to organize: “The IAM Union is proud to welcome these workers into the IAM family. We would like to give special thanks to Milwaukee Common Council Members Alderman Alex Brower, Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic, Alderperson JoCasta Zamarripa, and Alderman Robert J. Bauman for standing in solidarity with Discovery World workers and supporting their right to organize. We stand ready to support them as they move toward a strong first contract that reflects their value, protects their rights, and ensures Discovery World remains a place where workers and the community can thrive together.”
The IAM Union represents around 600,000 active and retired members across various industries throughout North America.
