The U.S. Census Bureau will begin an embargo on the 2024 American Community Survey (ACS) 1-year estimates starting September 9, 2025, at 10 a.m. Eastern Time. The embargoed data will be released to the public on September 11.
The ACS is a key source of statistics about people and housing in the United States. It covers topics such as language spoken at home, education, commuting patterns, employment status, mortgage and rent information, income levels, poverty rates, and health insurance coverage. According to the Census Bureau, “It is the only source of local estimates for most of the 40-plus topics it covers.”
The embargoed one-year statistics will be accessible to registered subscribers for all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, congressional districts, metropolitan statistical areas, and other geographic regions with populations of at least 65,000.
Subscribers can access these statistics from Tuesday, September 9 at 10 a.m. ET until Thursday, September 11 at 12:01 a.m. ET. During this period, wire and distribution services are not allowed to distribute news stories or data files before the official release time. The Census Bureau notes that “Wire and distribution services are prohibited from distributing embargoed news stories and data files before the public release date and time.” Additional details about these rules can be found in the Census Bureau’s embargo policy.
All related data products—including those on data.census.gov, through the API, summary files, and other tools—will become publicly available by 10 a.m. ET on September 11.
